A few things to clear before you pay — Tokyo International Foto Awards 2026 has 2 hard rules that disqualify entries.
What this contest takes
Standard terms — you keep copyright and full control; the licence is limited to promoting the contest.
- Non-exclusive use for TIFA promotion, exhibition, and annual book.
- Duration: Perpetual non-commercial promotional use.
- You keep your copyright
- Credited when used
What disqualifies you
AI imagery is permitted, usually only inside a dedicated category — enter it in the right track.
- Copyright ownership Entrant must hold copyright or be authorised by the copyright holder. “Entrant warrants ownership or authorisation of submitted work.”
- Ai generation AI-generated images allowed ONLY within the dedicated AI category. Excluded from Photographer of the Year and Discovery of the Year honours. “AI-generated Images will only be eligible for prizes within that category (gold/silver/bronze in sub-categories, and overall category), but will NOT be eligible for the Photographer of the Year and Discovery of the Year.”
The full editorial read continues with past-winner pattern, fee-to-prize value, rights translated, and three comparable competitions. Studio reads the rest.

Jury context
Tokyo-based international jury including Asian-market editors, gallerists, and art directors. Same family as PX3 (Farmani Group) but with stronger weight on Asian editorial register and discovery- of-new-voices framing.
Priorities: visual voice conceptual clarity composition cultural specificity editorial relevance
Tone: gallery register asian market discovery sequenced editorial voice
Avoid: stock aesthetic generic tourist over processed decontextualized cliched
Past winners — text notes
The Discovery of the Year honour explicitly rewards new voices — photographers without extensive prior international recognition can compete on equal footing. Editorial and fine-art categories have produced the most recent Photographer of the Year laureates. AI category is dedicated; non-AI photographers should NOT cross- submit to that track.
These are text-only curatorial observations, never images of past winners.
Prizes
TIFA Photographer of the Year €3,000 plus trophy. New Talent of the Year €1,000 plus trophy. Category winners receive cash and Tokyo exhibition.
